CAFÉ CENTRAL. Nuno Nunes-Ferreira
Juan Silió Gallery in Madrid presents the latest work by Portuguese artist Nuno Nunes-Ferreira. café central, reflects on the routines of information and exchange of opinions. The café, any café, has become the main information center where you can read the newspaper, comment on the latest news or discuss a football match. A space where everyone and everything is placed on the same level.
Newspaper is the main raw material of the Works gathered in this exhibition. Thus, the artist reminds us of the burden that such a common material contains: from the moment of writing its contents, its reading and its subsequent social use. In the words of João Silvério – curator who has written the text that accompanies the exhibition – through accumulation, assembly and collage he generates “fragments of signs that are losing their reference, in a critical action on the profusion of information that daily arrives at this meeting place, exalting dialogues and contradictory discussions on the most varied topics and events of everyday life”.
Such widespread and internalized rituals serve Nunes-Ferreira to talk once again about collective memory. But, unlike previous works where he addressed specific events in the recent history of Spain and Portugal – such as the work Spain presented at ARCO 2020, which was made up of a collection of original political stickers from the transition to the present day – this time he talks about the daily routines of information and its management.
The Works by Nuno Nunes-Ferreira are present in collections such as Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Fundação EDP, IVAM, Fundación Focus Abengoa, Fundación Sorigué, North Collection of Contemporary Art, DKV Collection, Kells Collection or Pilar Citoler, among others.
